Pertek Castle

Pertek Castle, constructed on a hill on the opposite bank of the Murat River to the south of the district, is today situated on an island due to the inundation of the region by the waters of the Keban Dam Reservoir. Although the castle underwent repairs during the Ottoman period, its original construction date remains unknown. The fortification consists of a double enceinte, with architectural remains located between the two defensive walls. On the southern façade of the castle, finely cut stone masonry is interspersed with red, hard-fired bricks and scattered blue glazed tiles. Within the castle, there is a cistern as well as additional structural remains. The site on which the castle stands also corresponds to the location of the ancient settlement of Pertek. It is reported that the castle was restored by Khalid ibn al-Walid; furthermore, a statue of Karakuş (PORTOK in Mongolian), which previously stood within the castle, was removed and replaced with an inscription written in Arabic.
